Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Masahiro Fujita), Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Masashi Fujii), IHI Corporation (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan) Koto Ward, President and CEO: Hiroshi Ide), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Kenichi Hori), and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Tsuyoshi Hashimoto) The five companies (hereinafter collectively referred to as the "Five Companies") have begun a joint study (hereinafter referred to as the "Study") toward the construction of an ammonia supply base in the Soma area of Fukushima Prefecture.

Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) when burned , so it is attracting attention as an effective means of combating global warming. Since it can replace fossil fuels, it is a next-generation energy that contributes not only to power generation but also to decarbonization in the industrial field. It is also promising as a hydrogen carrier that stores and transports hydrogen by converting it into a different state or material, and is expected to play a major role in building a hydrogen society (a society that utilizes hydrogen as a familiar source of energy). Masu.

In this study, in addition to investigating the creation of a base for importing, storing, and supplying clean ammonia (*) from overseas in the Soma area of Fukushima Prefecture, we will also conduct a demand survey for hydrogen and ammonia in order to establish a wide-area supply base for ammonia. I'll work on it. In addition, in anticipation of future demand, we will begin investigating decarbonization of thermal power generation using ammonia with business users such as power generation companies, steel companies, paper companies, and chemical companies.

The five companies will combine their respective knowledge to expand the circle of decarbonization in the Tohoku region, which is based in the Soma area, and will proceed with the construction of an ammonia supply base so that they can contribute to the economic development of the region. As we move forward with this study, we will continue to work with the cooperation of Fukushima Prefecture, Soma City, and Shinchi Town, and work together with the public and private sectors to realize projects that can contribute to regional decarbonization and economic development. Masu.

Note) *: Ammonia with a low environmental impact, produced using a method that significantly reduces CO 2
generated during conventional ammonia synthesis .
